The Challenge
The London Borough of Hounslow required a comprehensive signage refresh across its parks and playgrounds to improve consistency, legibility, and durability throughout the borough.
With a large number of sites and sign locations, the project needed to balance:
- Clear, accessible public information for a wide range of park users
- Robust construction suitable for long-term outdoor use
- Resistance to vandalism and graffiti
- A repeatable design system that could be rolled out across multiple locations
In total, the project involved the replacement and installation of over 250 signs, requiring careful coordination, standardisation, and efficient on-site delivery.
Our solution
We designed a cohesive signage system tailored specifically for Hounslow’s parks and playground environments. The final solution combined clarity of information with a durable construction approach suitable for high-use public spaces.
The signage package included:
- Bespoke aluminium freestanding signs
- Aluminium railing-mounted signs for perimeter fencing
- Heads-up orientation mapping to help visitors understand park layouts and surrounding local areas
- Digitally printed graphics finished with anti-graffiti protection
- Consistent layouts and messaging across all sign types
Each sign was designed to be easily recognisable, legible at a distance, and resilient to everyday wear, weather exposure, and vandalism.
How did we deliver the project?

Design & Standardisation
We developed a clear, repeatable design system that could be applied consistently across the borough while remaining flexible enough to accommodate different park layouts, playground sizes, and sign locations.
As part of the design phase, we also created bespoke heads-up mapping for individual parks and local areas. These maps were carefully orientated to reflect the viewer’s real-world position, making it easier for park users to navigate paths, facilities, and surrounding neighbourhoods intuitively.
Layouts, typography, colour usage, mapping clarity, and material specifications were all considered to ensure accessibility, legibility, and long-term maintainability.

Manufacture
All signage was manufactured using aluminium for strength, with parts finished in a powder coated or anodised finish for corrosion resistance, and longevity. Graphics were produced using high-quality digital print, finished with an anti-graffiti laminate to allow easy cleaning and ongoing maintenance.
This approach ensured the signage could withstand frequent public interaction while retaining a clean and professional appearance over time.

Installation
Installation was delivered in planned batches to keep the programme efficient and minimise disruption. Parks and playgrounds were grouped geographically so teams could work methodically across neighbouring sites while reducing travel time.
Higher-priority locations were completed first, ensuring the most visible and heavily used parks benefited early in the rollout. Where required, existing signage was removed and responsibly recycled as part of the works.
